One of the biggest misconceptions about content creation is that successful businesses are somehow more creative than everyone else. They're not.
Most businesses creating great content simply have a repeatable process. They aren't sitting around waiting for inspiration to strike or hoping the perfect idea appears while they're making a cup of tea. They have a framework that helps them turn ideas into content consistently.
If you've ever found yourself staring at your phone wondering what to post, this guide is for you.I'm going to walk you through the exact process I use when creating content for my businesses. It's simple, repeatable and, most importantly, it works.
How To Tackle Content Creation
Step 1: Start With A Content Pillar
Before you create anything, decide which content pillar you're creating from.
I use three:
Connection
Content that helps your audience connect with you, your story and your values.
Examples:
- Why you started your business
- A lesson you've learned
- A mistake you've made
- A founder story
- A personal milestone
Culture
Content that gives people a behind-the-scenes look at your business.
Examples:
- Packing orders
- Product making
- Studio updates
- Team moments
- Launch preparation
Communication
Content that educates your audience about your products, services or expertise.
Examples:
- Tutorials
- Product demonstrations
- FAQs
- Tips and advice
- Industry insights
Every piece of content I create fits into one of these three categories.
If it doesn't, I probably don't post it.
Step 2: Decide What The Content Is Trying To Achieve
One of the biggest mistakes I see small business owners make is creating content with no clear objective.
The aim of your content shouldn't be:
- To get views
- To go viral
- To follow a trend
Instead, decide what you want the content to achieve.
For example:
- Introduce a new product
- Build trust with your audience
- Answer a customer question
- Increase awareness of a service
- Educate potential customers
- Grow your email list
Every piece of content should have a purpose.
Once you know the destination, the journey becomes much easier.
Step 3: Write Your Script First
This is the biggest content creation hack I can give you.
Before you film anything, write your voiceover script or text-on-screen captions.
Most people do this the other way around. They spend an hour filming random clips and then try to force a story together afterwards.
Writing your script first changes everything.
It helps you:
- Clarify your message
- Film only what you need
- Create stronger storytelling
- Save time editing
Your content should communicate something. The script helps ensure that happens.
Step 4: Build A Shot List
Once your script is written, creating a shot list becomes incredibly easy.
For a typical one-minute reel, I usually aim for:
- Around 30 quick one-second clips
- Around 10 longer three-second clips
The shorter clips keep the reel moving and maintain attention.
The longer clips give viewers space to absorb key moments in your story or voiceover.
This simple structure has dramatically improved the quality and watch time of my content.
Step 5: Film Your Content
Now it's time to film.
The key here is variety.
Think about capturing:
- Detail shots
- Wide shots
- POV shots
- Action shots
- Product shots
- Behind-the-scenes footage
If every clip looks identical, people quickly lose interest.
Mixing up your angles, distances and perspectives keeps the content visually engaging.
Step 6: Master The Basics Of Filming
You don't need expensive equipment to create great content. The majority of my content is filmed on an iPhone. Instead of focusing on buying new gear, focus on getting the basics right:
Lighting
Natural light is your best friend. Position yourself near a window whenever possible.
Audio
People will forgive average video quality much faster than poor audio quality.
Variety
Film the same scene from multiple angles and distances.
Stability
Use a tripod whenever possible to keep footage clean and professional.
Good content is rarely about expensive equipment. It's about clear communication.
Step 7: Edit With Purpose
I currently use Edits for most of my content.
Once you've uploaded your clips:
- Arrange them around your script
- Record your voiceover
- Remove unnecessary pauses
- Match clips to key moments in the story
One advantage of writing your script first is that editing becomes significantly faster.
You're no longer trying to figure out the story.
You already know the story.
Add Captions
Never underestimate the importance of captions.
Many people watch content with the sound off, especially when scrolling in public.
I personally like word-switch captions because they help keep the eye engaged.
A few tips:
- Keep captions reasonably sized
- Place them centrally or close to your face
- Ensure they don't cover important visuals
- Prioritise readability over style
Your audience shouldn't have to work hard to consume your content.
